I’m back in France, photographing more lovely places for the new book. Chateau de Rodie was amazing - the ancient castle sits within a working farm, with more animals and birds than I could count, including a number of rare breeds, not least a flock of Landais sheep. Suzanne, below, and her sister (Mole - don’t ask!) get the birds inside every night, safe from foxes. I went with them , and we took a moment to watch this snowy white bird’s display - unlike the bird on the left. He’d presumably seen it all before.

I was driving towards Allanche, in the Auvergne, on my third trip for Go Slow France, when I saw these horses by the side of the road. I pulled over, got out and stood with them for a while. It was a warm evening, and very quiet. Hardly anyone else passed. I was happy just to be out in the evening air after a day’s driving north. Isn’t it quiet when the engine is turned off, and you step out into stillness? The horses were pretty relaxed, just standing by the fence, swishing their tails and shaking their heads to keep the flies away.

I’ve been burning a lot of midnight oil recently, preparing for an exhibition at the Arison Gallery in Chorlton, Manchester, from 3rd November. Deciding, with Paul, the gallery owner, which images to use, then getting them printed to the highest possible quality, has been a slow process, with much deliberation and debate. The final selection is now being mounted and framed. Too late to change my mind now!
I’m pretty excited, as you might imagine... Arison will exhibit a selection of my work - people and places, cityscapes and landscapes, all taken with passion and pleasure.

This horse lives in Aquitaine, by the sea. I photographed him last year for his owner, and have just taken a new print of him to be framed for my exhibition, so that he can look out on Manchester with that thoughtful eye...

purposeful, yet sheepish

I'm just burning a disk of images for a travel client, and this image taken over a five-barred gate in Derbyshire caught my eye. Living in the very centre of a city, I love travel commisions - who wouldn't?! When they get me out into the British countryside, I am particularly happy. I have to be purposeful when I'm photographing a hotel or building, working my way through room my room, not getting in the way of the owners and guests, but usually when I'm outside I can meander a bit, exporing: peering round corners, down little lanes and over walls and fences.
