colour, shape and light

What's happened at Salford Quays over the last couple of decades is amazing: and the place is a real favourite with photographers, local and visiting. There's enough room, not least because of the huge tracts of water, for big skies to showcase stunning bulldings and structures - the bridges themselves are epic - and there's such strong colour and shape. These exteriors are well documented, but there's lots to see inside as well. The interior of The Lowry is so rewarding for a snapper - bright Lego colours juxtaposed brilliantly, and so much light and shade to play with...

integrity and industry

Salford Magistrates Court occupies a building that extends over a whole block, and was built originally as Salford Town Hall, long since relocacted. There are still a lot of the original featuures: tiling to walls and floors, stained glass windows, wood panelling. The space has been altered to accommodate the administration of justice: there are three courtrooms, judges and clerks rooms, waiting rooms; places to sign in for appointments and interviews, pay fines; lots of filing space; - even cells. And, upstairs, a ballroom and bar, not used for many years.

daisy, daisy

Daisy Works, or Daisy Mill, is an enormous building: on the main road from Manchester to Stockport, thousand of people pass it every day. It looks much the same as it did more than half a century ago, except for the loss of a chimney. The spaces inside are enormous, and very flexible. Every floor in the various 'wings'(!) has been used differently over the years, and many are still active and buzzing. The images commissioned are for sales particulars: Daisy Works is about to enter another phase in its long and useful life.

playing with light

Posted on Tuesday, January 31, 2012, Posted in architectural, commissioned, manchester
I was asked  to go along and photograph a lighting workshop held in Manchester Cathedral, one of a number of "NightGeists" being hosted in various iconic locations by Bega. The workshops give delegates - most of them designers of one sort or another - an enjoyable way of playing with Bega products and taking a ‘hands on’ approach to the application of the luminaires and how they look in situ.

Capheaton Hall

Posted on Friday, February 24, 2012, Posted in architectural, commissioned, interiors, travel
I really enjoy my travel work, and one of the loveliest places I've photographed is Capheaton Hall in Northumbria, a glorious house set in stunning grounds; rolling parkland in the manner of Capability Brown, amazing old greenhouses, a walled garden, pigs, horses, a fishing lake and tennis courts.  I first visited for Quintessential Bed and Breakfast, whose luxury offer suits Capheaton wonderfully - and vice versa.

product photography

Posted on Thursday, February 16, 2012, Posted in architectural, commissioned, interiors, product
When asked to shoot products, there's always a pause in the conversation, at least at my end, while I wait to hear not only what the products are, but, importantly, where they are! Sometimes a delivery to the studio will follow, and I set up what equipment I need and get on with it. Sometimes, though, I have to go where the product is to get the shot - always interesting. I was approached by a wondrous glass company, that designs, manufactures and installs contemporary coloured, stained, kilnformed-fused hot glass, and has products installed across the country.

oldham coliseum

Posted on Sunday, May 10, 2009, Posted in architectural, commercial, interiors, published
The history of the Coliseum Theatre in Oldham is fascinating; built originally by local craftspeople for the Grand American Circus in 1885, it was home to live acts interspersed with silent films from 1911. Derelict by 1939, when the lease was taken up by The Oldham Repertory Theatre Club, it has had the inevitable ups and downs. Many of its productions were televised in the 50’s and 60’s; many awards have been won; records have repeatedly been broken for ticket sales. I went to the theatre to help them build an up-to-date image library and made a start with the splendid auditorium.

perfect model

Posted on Sunday, January 10, 2010, Posted in architectural, commercial
I zipped off to Balfour Beatty’s offices last month with a carload of kit - lights, stands, the lot - to photograph an architectural model for a new school to be built in Cheshire...a very interesting assignment. The model had been made for the final submission to those making the decision, who had organised a competition between a number of contractors and designers, which was reaching its final stages.

manchester's wheel

Posted on Tuesday, February 09, 2010, Posted in architectural, cityscape, commercial, manchester, urban
The Wheel of Manchester is 60m high, air-conditioned and, more to the point in this weather, heated. It’s also really beautiful lit up pinkly against a deep blue evening sky. That’s it reflected in Selfridges on the left hand side.  I wonder if it’s pink because this is Valentine’s week?

urbis

This must be one of the most photographed buildings in Manchester - which sets a challenge for me... Here's my view, last week. Will be different again next week! This must be one of the most photographed buildings in Manchester - which sets a challenge for me... Here's my view, last week.

old and new

It can be such a great start to the day to get up at sunrise and go for a wander somewhere in the city with the camera. Yesterday I went down to Castlefield and had a very productive couple of hours before the reward of scrambled eggs and a HUGE cup of tea. This picture shows the 47 storeys of the Beetham Tower (well, most of them) reflected in the canal alongside some (occupied) barges. A little tweaking has taken place - I was after an 'old postcard' effect...

lowry theatre

Posted on Tuesday, April 13, 2010, Posted in architectural, cityscape, manchester, urban
Out and about in the spring sunshine, I was showing some visitors some of our local delights. We stopped off aat Salford Quays, where the skyline is always changing as development lopes on - there's always something new to see. My eye was caught by the Lowry, so dramatic in the strong sunlight against a gorgeous blue sky.

St Giles stripes

Posted on Sunday, October 10, 2010, Posted in architectural, cityscape, commercial, urban
In London this weekend. Saturday's shoot done, I had today to drift a little and enjoy the city... In Holborn I had a look at the new development at St Giles, designed by Renzo Piano for Legal and General, which I'd looked down at from Centre Point a few years ago as construction began. It is quite something, covering an entire city block. While the inner courtyard elevations are clad in a quiet, very pale grey, the external faces are bright orange, yellow and green - absolutely glowing in the sun today.

clever colour

Posted on Tuesday, December 14, 2010, Posted in architectural, commercial, interiors, urban
My client needed photographs of the three new buildings to be occupied by BBC North at Media City in Manchester. The design, by ID:SR, Sheppard Robson's interiors arm, is stunning. The fit-out isn't finished yet, by any means, but the way that space, light and colour have been used economically, effectively and attractively to accommodate what will be a varied, changing, project/programme switching influx of people is brilliant.

in good company

Manchester University is an amazing place, up there internationally in terms of quality in both teaching and research - the biggest UK educational campus outside London.

rail surprise

Posted on Thursday, January 13, 2011, Posted in architectural, commercial, interiors, manchester
Victoria Station was opened in 1844, named after the monarch with her "gracious permission". I visited earlier this week,  to photograph for GMITE, who will be communicating over coming months on the refurbishment of the station, which starts in the spring. The station is very busy; trains and trams are going in and out all the time, of course, but it's also right next to and connected to Manchester Evening News Arena, the second busiest entertainment venue in the UK after the O2 Arena in London.

Salford skies

I've been out and about recently looking for some images to make a set, along with some of Manchester, for 'new' wallspace in St Ann's Hospice's Little Hulton building. Refurbishment of part of the in-patient unit has just been completed, and the hospice wanted a selection of pictures: some for the corridors to generate interest and comment, and some restful, "but not boring or gloomy" ones for side rooms. An excellent and enjoyable commission!

recreational tiling

I flew over to the Isle of Man recently to photograph some beautiful office refurbishments to a spectacular, old(ish) building, which was once a hotel. On arrival, the client gave me a tour of the place, which has fabulous views of the harbour at Douglas.  The building is shared with another company, and together the staff have use of a gym and pool that still have the wonderful, original tiles. Here's a peek.

poker place

Posted on Friday, April 15, 2011, Posted in architectural, commercial, interiors, manchester
Manchester 235 is already pretty well-known around these parts. It's the real deal, with an impressive gaming floor, two restaurants, function room and various private rooms and lounges, open all night and uber-glam. The latest addition is a poker lounge, which I went to photograph this week. The colours absolutely glow - glorious stuff.

a fabulous hillside home...

Posted on Tuesday, May 10, 2011, Posted in architectural, commercial, interiors, portrait
This amazing building, Kaywana Hall, is so sleek and contemporary, perched in among huge trees on a hillside just up from the Dart estuary in Devon. It's full of light, of exceptional quality in every little detail and ...just works! The builders were just finishing off a refurbishment of the huge outdoor pool and two new guest suites, so I had to dodge materials and ladders and piles of tiles to get the shots my client needed.

Scarista beach

Posted on Thursday, June 09, 2011, Posted in architectural, landscape, travel
Well, this is a wonderful trip: the Isle of Harris has been on the 'bucket list' for some time now, and it's great to finally get here. Staying at Scarista House was a brilliant idea - if I say so myself!! It's incredibly comfortable and friendly, with fab staff and stupendous food. A former manse, situated by Scarista beach with, effectively, just wild roses and the dunes between it and the sea.

Iona Abbey

Posted on Tuesday, June 14, 2011, Posted in architectural, family, portrait, travel
My Mum has for a long time wanted to go to Iona. Her own parents had been there on retreat with their church group, experiencing the Iona Community, helping in the Abbey, and exploring the island: but while Mum had heard so many stories, she'd never yet been. I was curious too. So we went to the tip of a headland on Mull and sailed over the water on a beautiful day in Davey's little brown boat.
