role reversal
Posted on Sunday, January 08, 2012, Posted in black and white, portrait
I do lots of portraits for people who, when they first contact me, tell me that they hate having their picture taken. I can well understand it - if its an unpleasant experience and then you don't even like the results, who wouldn't feel negative? I like the challenge, and enjoy spending the time and care it takes to organise a good experience, a relaxed and enjoyable shoot, and get great results - whether the pictures are for work or personal use.

reflection

Another day, another detour. This is a reflection of a tree in the still water of the Castlefield Basin. The sky was grey, the day stayed gray, but it didn't rain. (Looking on the bright side, here!)

st ann's hospice
Posted on Tuesday, September 23, 2008, Posted in black and white, hospice
I've worked with St Ann's Hospice since 2007, and my admiration and respect just grows and grows the more I learn about what they do. What I’ve seen is so very different to the often gloomy image many of us have of hospices in our mind’s eye - there is so much warmth, light and laughter. Whether they’re using day care facilities or in-patient beds, people with life-threatening illnesses find professional excellence alongside immensely supportive personal connections. This is a picture from my first ever visit to day care at the Little Hulton hospice last year.

Just been printing this picture to take down to the framer, and was thinking that sometimes black and white is just perfect.

doctor caligari

The Artizani Theatre Company is rehearsing The Cabaret (yes!) of Dr Caligari at the John Thaw Theatre at Manchester University, and I dropped in for an hour to get some shots for them.

hayfield hillside

I was actually in Hayfield yesterday to photograph performers rehearsing for an open-air production later this month. James, the artistic director of Artizani Street Theatre, lives on a farm, and they're using a platform set up in one of the barns, not just as it gives them a lot of space, but also to keep them out of the rain...wet summer, this! As I was leaving, it started to get very dark very quickly. I noticed these clouds coming in fast above the hillside. A storm was brewing, and a few moments later the heavens opened.

madonna

I so love this picture, with mum as the deliberate focus. I look at it and think 'madonna' - serenity? purity? Or is it just that there's so much love there?

I like autumn
Posted on Monday, November 08, 2010, Posted in black and white, fine art, landscape, manchester
This is such a wonderful time of year. Maybe it's memories of all those new school years and uniforms, but autumn for me is redolent of new starts, new challenges and new clothes (even now I always like the new autumn ranges best!).

stormy skies
Posted on Friday, February 11, 2011, Posted in black and white, france, landscape
I love interesting skies, and storms certainly bring those, in spades.
This image comes from a visit to an extraordinary hotel - Hotel Cuq en Terrasses - as part of a book commission. I was outside, just before dinner, photographing the grounds, which are on a sharp incline, when clouds just started to boil up in the sky. The railing in the picture is the edge of the terrace; tables were set up there for dinner, and a number of guests were enjoying the evening sunshine with drinks, looking out at the wonderful view.

new stuff

Always nice when some new kit arrives and there's time to have a proper look at it! This weekend it's an upgrade to a black and white post-processing tool, Nik Software's Silver Effex Pro 2.
It takes a while to get to grips with something that offers so many new options; but great fun. I was very keen to get my hands on this software as I'm off to Venice next week, hoping for some misty, moody shots that - I hope - will be perfect for black and white treatment.

Those eyes!

This lad is really something! Not only one of the most good-natured boys ever, but one of the most enchanting! He can sit up now, and is a VERY good arm-waver...world-class! He has a very appealing 'signature' move - looks like he's working the controls on motorbike handlebars. Cool...

the youngest guest
Posted on Tuesday, August 23, 2011, Posted in baby, black and white, portrait, wedding
A baby is such a precious wee thing at any time; this tiny baby came rather worryingly earlier than planned into the world...but she's fine now, and SO loved. Gracie won't remember being the youngest guest at her Aunt Laura's wedding, but everyone else who was there will, I expect. And of course, Aunt Laura will have quite a few photographs to show her niece the story of the day...
