There are many things I like about my job, and meeting new people and going to new places are both high up on the list. My trip to photograph three beautiful places for a travel client at the end of last month was a real treat. Each place was very different, but so full of its own character and personality. Two were in the Cotswolds, and that amazing honey coloured stone was a big feature, and such beautiful buildings set in a just-getting-to-autumn landscape were a treat for the eye.

the lost vegetables
Posted on Monday, August 30, 2010, Posted in commercial, fine art, food, france
I've been having a housekeeping week, doing some sorting out of files, labelling them properly and backing them up carefully, after my recent horror of a crashed disk. Well - I've been trying to! It's so easy to get distracted, such as when I found a collection of pictures I took a few years ago at the vegetable market in Cannes, and found myself going through them and doing some editing and organising. Vegetables can be beautiful, huh? Oh - I see there's some non-veggie oysters there too.

business portaits

Businesses need pictures of their teams, to help them show the personality behind the company, and this company CX hadn't had a new picture taken in several years. When she booked me for her portrait session, Sue explained that she needed a variety of pictures for different uses - website, annual report and to illustrate a profile of her in a business magazine next week. We talked through how best to approach it, and she brought a bag with different outfits to the studio. After a strong cup of tea, we got started, using costume changes and varied backdrops to get what we needed. Job done!

I zipped over on the Dover to Calais ferry, then drove south...I've never been to the Vienne region properly before - have just driven through it to go south. The properties my client wanted me to photograph were about 40 minutes from Poitiers, in an area of France known as "La France Profonde' for it's unspoiled and natural beauty. It was amazing to arrive at the village of Angles sur l'Anglin, which I'd been told was one of the county's most beautiful.

St Giles stripes
Posted on Sunday, October 10, 2010, Posted in architectural, cityscape, commercial, urban
In London this weekend. Saturday's shoot done, I had today to drift a little and enjoy the city... In Holborn I had a look at the new development at St Giles, designed by Renzo Piano for Legal and General, which I'd looked down at from Centre Point a few years ago as construction began. It is quite something, covering an entire city block. While the inner courtyard elevations are clad in a quiet, very pale grey, the external faces are bright orange, yellow and green - absolutely glowing in the sun today.

blue onion
Posted on Sunday, November 22, 2009, Posted in commercial, exhibition, fine art, france, landscape
I found a huge onion plant in the kitchen garden at Auberge de Concasty in France, and got right down onto the ground to photograph it against the incredibly blue sky. That was before the inn’s owner, Martine, mentioned that she always wore boots in the garden as there were occasionally snakes around.
I’ve had the picture blown up to a metre high and printed onto canvas - it has considerable impact! It’s hanging in my current exhibition at the Arison Gallery and is proving very popular - I’ve taken orders for three copies in the last fortnight.

Posted on Monday, November 14, 2011, Posted in commercial, commissioned, portrait
This was a quick and pleasant commission: a single headshot for a professional man who knew what he wanted...an image in black and white, which was - is - direct, strong and straightforward. I really like the result. Clarity pays off, that's for sure.

clever colour
Posted on Tuesday, December 14, 2010, Posted in architectural, commercial, interiors, urban
My client needed photographs of the three new buildings to be occupied by BBC North at Media City in Manchester. The design, by ID:SR, Sheppard Robson's interiors arm, is stunning. The fit-out isn't finished yet, by any means, but the way that space, light and colour have been used economically, effectively and attractively to accommodate what will be a varied, changing, project/programme switching influx of people is brilliant.

perfect model
Posted on Sunday, January 10, 2010, Posted in architectural, commercial
I zipped off to Balfour Beatty’s offices last month with a carload of kit - lights, stands, the lot - to photograph an architectural model for a new school to be built in Cheshire...a very interesting assignment. The model had been made for the final submission to those making the decision, who had organised a competition between a number of contractors and designers, which was reaching its final stages.

The new iSleeve™ hit Manchester this week, a beautiful, luxurious, natural leather cover for an iPad or iPhone, in a range of colours.
The pop-up shop at 6 King Street looked absolutely wonderful tonight at the opening party, glowing like a jewel-box in the dark, wine flowing, lots of smiles...

yellow trams
Posted on Wednesday, January 20, 2010, Posted in commercial, manchester, published
Manchester has a great tram system, which has been being upgraded over the last year, along with bright new yellow branding . New trams in the yellow livery have arrived and are gradually being introduced. Three are in service and one or two on test, so when I went out to photograph them for GMPTE today, I had to be patient. But they’re worth waiting for - really striking. Well. I think so.

tram love: 2
Posted on Saturday, December 10, 2011, Posted in commercial, commissioned, manchester, transport
I didn't know I'd turn into a yellow tram geek, but I did, somewhere along the line(!). So - being asked to go to the depot and get some images for the Transport Authority meant it was beginning to feel a lot like Christmas. Things I found out on my visit:
1. The yellow trams are referred to as 'bananas' by the staff. Not too inventive, but I can get that...
2. They're 'stabled' at the depot.
3. The toolkits are red with yellow dots. Love that.

I thoroughly enjoyed my travels in France for Alastair Sawday Publishing in 2009, and in England and Wales in 2010, for the two latest books in their gorgeous "Go Slow" series, which were published in April and November 2010 respectively. They're really lovely books, and truly do showcase some very special places to stay.

The Wheel of Manchester is 60m high, air-conditioned and, more to the point in this weather, heated. It’s also really beautiful lit up pinkly against a deep blue evening sky. That’s it reflected in Selfridges on the left hand side. I wonder if it’s pink because this is Valentine’s week?

Today’s Ladies Fashion Lunch in the ballroom of the Palace Hotel was absolutely fabulous, darling! An annual fund-raising event by St Ann’s Hospice, it also launched Breast Cancer Awareness month. A champagne reception started everyone off nicely, then, after an amazing performance by The Bar Wizards (finalists from ‘Britain’s Got Talent”) and lunch, there was a fashion show (including a spectacular pillow fight), auction and raffle.

I do like photographing food, right through from the assembly of the ingredients to the heat and flurry of the cooking and the speed and technique of the kitchen team...and, of course, the finished product. This evening I was photographing an event at which some great canapes were served, so I spent a few minutes ogling and shooting them as well as capturing the attendees, sponsors and venue. And then I ate some, sharing a glass of wine with my client. Happy days!

rail surprise
Posted on Thursday, January 13, 2011, Posted in architectural, commercial, interiors, manchester
Victoria Station was opened in 1844, named after the monarch with her "gracious permission". I visited earlier this week, to photograph for GMITE, who will be communicating over coming months on the refurbishment of the station, which starts in the spring. The station is very busy; trains and trams are going in and out all the time, of course, but it's also right next to and connected to Manchester Evening News Arena, the second busiest entertainment venue in the UK after the O2 Arena in London.

Manchester's fabulous tram service rebranding includes staff uniforms. I spent a morning out and about on tramstops and trams with three officers whose job is to help customers, as well as to check tickets and travel passes. We had a great time, perhaps partly due to the hilarity caused by my swaying about with the camera on moving trams trying to focus and not fall over!

The British Council for Shopping Centres is holding its 25th annual conference at the spanking new arena and conference centre in Liverpool. I went along for placenorthwest to have a look at the exhibition, which proved to be full of colour and interest. The (mock) Beatles greeted delegates with humour and aplomb...
This, and 17 other shots chosen by the editor (a man of great taste and distinction, btw) are in the gallery at www.placenorthwest.co.uk/bcsc-08-in-pictures.html"

I flew over to the Isle of Man recently to photograph some beautiful office refurbishments to a spectacular, old(ish) building, which was once a hotel. On arrival, the client gave me a tour of the place, which has fabulous views of the harbour at Douglas. The building is shared with another company, and together the staff have use of a gym and pool that still have the wonderful, original tiles. Here's a peek.

The museum of science and industry is a major attraction in Manchester, and has been steadfastly improving its appeal over recent years. This includes new, extended and renovated buildings, close attention to service standards, an enormously high level of interactivity (?) and some absolutely world-class exhibitions .
I was on my way to Castlefield one evening at sunset and saw this image, with the - well, thing - that marks the museum's skyline against a dramatic sky. A bit of experimentation followed, and this was the result.

kirsty gets sporty

Kirsty has a number of strings to her bow - not least, she's a really good make-up artist and an excellent model. She needed some sportswear shots for a model agency (with offices in London and LA - I was well impressed!) and so we got together in a sports centre with a bagful of sports clothing and got down to work. We were just outside Dundee, with snow on the hills, and ice underfoot outside, so not too much like LA..
(Oh - the agency loved the pictures - Kirsty is now on their books. I've asked to be her official photographer for all her overseas assignments, inc LA.

Manchester 235 is already pretty well-known around these parts. It's the real deal, with an impressive gaming floor, two restaurants, function room and various private rooms and lounges, open all night and uber-glam. The latest addition is a poker lounge, which I went to photograph this week. The colours absolutely glow - glorious stuff.

I use internet search engines a lot, and often before a shoot - I like to know something about who or what I’m photographing. Ok - I’m nosy by nature - though I prefer to say I have an endearing natural curiosity...and helps get my brain working before I even see the place, person, or product.

I’m SO excited - this picture of mine, taken in France in the summer of 2007, is on the cover of a book published this month! The book is the very latest edition of “French Bed and Breakfast”, one of Alastar Sawday’s Special Places to Stay series. The picture is one of three - it may not be huge, but that’s not stopping me smiling from ear to ear! You can (just!!) see it on Amazon if you click here.

a fabulous hillside home...
Posted on Tuesday, May 10, 2011, Posted in architectural, commercial, interiors, portrait
This amazing building, Kaywana Hall, is so sleek and contemporary, perched in among huge trees on a hillside just up from the Dart estuary in Devon. It's full of light, of exceptional quality in every little detail and ...just works! The builders were just finishing off a refurbishment of the huge outdoor pool and two new guest suites, so I had to dodge materials and ladders and piles of tiles to get the shots my client needed.

I lived in Bolton a very long time ago, and used to love going to the fish market with my friend Sue on a Saturday morning. Sue was lodging with us while her house in Altrincham was being renovated. There were things on those market stalls that I'd never seen before, didn't know the names of and didn't have the first idea how to cook. Luckily, Sue did. She acquired a book of classic fish cookery and worked her way through it - it was wonderful! Market in the morning, fabulous home-cooked dinner that night. I still remember her skate with capers.

unity theatre
Posted on Friday, February 20, 2009, Posted in commercial, performance, theatre
Alice Robinson sold out last night at the Unity Theatre in Liverpool; every seat filled, every eye on her one-woman performance. This was a shot I took during the performance itself, but I like to go to the dress rehearsal wherever possible, as the photographer can (if everyone agrees, of course) move about a bit and get some better and more varied angles. I'm also fascinated by both the artistic and the technical processes...I love seeing how all comes together on the night.

What a surprising and fascinating world it is...I went to Gloucestershire last week to photograph a beautiful home, complete with orangery, ha-ha and dripping wisteria, and met its inspirational owner, Janet Cooksey. I found that she not only welcomes guests to Uplands House, and restores paintings - you'd think that was enough, wouldn't you? - but will also next month defend her title of World Veteran Fencing Champion.

Today I've been to Knowsley to make the last few images for a set of features for regional property website placenorthwest.co.uk. The big cat is pretty dramatic, and all the more so at sunset. It's at Halewood, at the huge car plant there, just outside Liverpool, quite close to John Lennon airport. It will appear on Thursday, in a gallery of pictures alongside the editor's analysis of property and regeneration issues in Knowsley.

What a great trip to Nonsuch House I had last week...I'm just sitting editing the images now, and smiling! While I was there for a commercial client, it wasn't my first visit. I'd been a few times under my own steam, as it's a compellingly welcoming and comfortably place in an outstanding location. It felt very much like renewing acquaintance with friends. They've just been listed as one of UK's Top 50 B&Bs by The Independent. I agree, wholeheartedly, Kit and Penny!

oldham coliseum
Posted on Sunday, May 10, 2009, Posted in architectural, commercial, interiors, published
The history of the Coliseum Theatre in Oldham is fascinating; built originally by local craftspeople for the Grand American Circus in 1885, it was home to live acts interspersed with silent films from 1911. Derelict by 1939, when the lease was taken up by The Oldham Repertory Theatre Club, it has had the inevitable ups and downs. Many of its productions were televised in the 50’s and 60’s; many awards have been won; records have repeatedly been broken for ticket sales.
I went to the theatre to help them build an up-to-date image library and made a start with the splendid auditorium.

I do like breakfast: some people "don't bother" with it, but for me it's the best meal of the day. Sometimes, in my job, I have to photograph breakfast tables, and the breakfasts that are set out on them, though usually this involves the breakfast being eaten by other people. From time to time, though, I just have to knuckle down and eat what I photograph.

The last in the placenorthwest series of features today, with my picture gallery of St Helens. I really enjoyed the variety. The market, selling shiny shoes, school uniforms and pig's ears, was just across the road from the World of Glass, where a glass blowing demo was under way. I also got to see the unveiling of a statue of the Saints rugby team captain, and the amazing 'Dream', on the site of an old colliery, pictured here. You can see how huge it is, by the tiny people to the right.

I really enjoy travelling and meeting new people, and am very lucky that my clients find such beautiful and interesting places for me to photograph. Here, at Uplands House, the garden was just one of the lovely distinguishing features, with outstanding wisteria in the early spring followed by magnificent roses in summer. The history of the family, which has lived here for a very long time, includes some low and sad points, as well as laughter and triumphs. And, as a family home, the pictures scattered around tell part of that story, of this family's journey.

Brother are major sponsors of the Hallé, and I went along to the Bridgewater Hall at the weekend to take some pictures for them at their Oscar-themed dinner, before Sir Mark Elder donned a long gold brocade coat ("I am Oscar tonight!") to conduct the full orchestra playing Oscar-awarded music. The dinner menu was exquisite - exactly that created for last year's Oscars ceremony - note the white chocolate Oscar on that plate. Wow!

I was on my second trip to rural France for the new book, and actually rather a bit lost. I was trying to find what turned out to be one of the most lovely hotels I've visited, when I drove past this view. I stopped, of course, and put the hazard lights on - it wasn't a very sensible place to stop - and stood there for a moment or two, just loving the undulations and the lines. A car came past, first slowing down politely, then down came the window, and the gentile homme asked whether I was ok - could he help? I thanked him profusely, assured him I was fine, and he drove on.

I do love Manchester's trams, especially the new yellow ones. I've become a total tram geek - anorak? - whatever! Great then, to go along to the Arndale Centre, to watch - and photograph - people taking time from their Saturday tasks, or leisure, to take a look at the exhibition stands about the proposed Metrolink 2nd City Crossing. There were big signs across the city centre, telling people about the exhibition, where it was and what it was about, and inviting their views, and there were plenty of staff on hand to answer questions.

Go Slow France is the third book in Sawday's hugely successful series, and includes 47 of France's most exquisite châteaux, B&Bs and hotels chosen as places to 'go slow'. I’m back in France, photographing more lovely places for the new book. Chateau de Rodie was amazing - the ancient castle sits within a working farm, with more animals and birds than I could count, including a number of rare breeds, not least a flock of Landais sheep. Suzanne, below, and her sister (Mole - don’t ask!) get the birds inside every night, safe from foxes. I went with them , and we took a moment to watch this snowy white bird’s display - unlike the bird on the left. He’d presumably seen it all before.

One of my lovely clients is making a film about their operations, and so when I went to photograph an event for them in Glasgow last week, I met these two smiling people, both charming experts in their field. Good to chat in the bit of downtime we had - don't we all lead such different lives??!! They were filming and interviewing people I was photographing, and vice versa - and so while they ended up in some of my pictures, I ended up in theirs too. I'm looking forward to seeing their finished product at at my client's big event in London in October. I think. Ho hum!

I met him at Manchester City Stadium for a portrait session, specifically for a piece to appear in the Manchester Evening News next week: just the start of the publicity that will come as he gets into his stride (see what I did there...?) for the run up (and again!) to the 2012 Olympics, for which he's a qualification contender. His day job is a little different - he works with in the finance field, wielding his laptop instead of those rather fearsome spikes. Go, Ben, go!

Salford Magistrates Court occupies a building that extends over a whole block, and was built originally as Salford Town Hall, long since relocacted. There are still a lot of the original featuures: tiling to walls and floors, stained glass windows, wood panelling. The space has been altered to accommodate the administration of justice: there are three courtrooms, judges and clerks rooms, waiting rooms; places to sign in for appointments and interviews, pay fines; lots of filing space; - even cells. And, upstairs, a ballroom and bar, not used for many years.

It's caws. And I know this because...?
I know this because I visited the dairy at Rhyd y Delyn Farm on Anglesey, where Menai Jones and her family make a range of really wonderful cheeses, including a camembert style, and one with samphire, which gives the green flecks you can see in one of the pictures I took. As you drive into the farm, there are the cows/caws whose milk makes the cheese, grazing all around you, or chewing the cud contentedly under the big, spreading trees. Menai and her daughter Elin are pictured here, in the spotless dairy.

James is a singer/songwriter from Kentucky in the USA, now living in France, who uses both electric and acoustic guitars. He and Monnika, a writer, live in an astonishingly beautiful cleft in the hills, with two streams (creeks, says James) running through their land, on which they've built a couple of yurts.
Listening to him rehearsing in his mountain studio at the time, I was struck by the depth and power of his voice, and Leonard Cohen came to mind.

Daisy Works, or Daisy Mill, is an enormous building: on the main road from Manchester to Stockport, thousand of people pass it every day. It looks much the same as it did more than half a century ago, except for the loss of a chimney. The spaces inside are enormous, and very flexible. Every floor in the various 'wings'(!) has been used differently over the years, and many are still active and buzzing. The images commissioned are for sales particulars: Daisy Works is about to enter another phase in its long and useful life.

I was driving towards Allanche, in the Auvergne, on my third trip for Go Slow France, when I saw these horses by the side of the road. I pulled over, got out and stood with them for a while. It was a warm evening, and very quiet. Hardly anyone else passed. I was happy just to be out in the evening air after a day’s driving north. Isn’t it quiet when the engine is turned off, and you step out into stillness? The horses were pretty relaxed, just standing by the fence, swishing their tails and shaking their heads to keep the flies away.

It was just great - music, performance, great stalls selling all sorts of fascinating stuff, including some totally delicious food. The restaurants and cafes were buzzing and there were people dancing in the streets most of the afternoon. Even the wedding party going into Viva Brazil stopped for a look and a boogie. A brilliant time was had by all, including the photographer!

DPP Shape set up their spatial planning and design studio last year, bringing together considerable experience and expertise in regeneration and development. They needed to update their image library, so off I went with cameras and tripod to capture the studio and the team, which is led by Shelagh McNerney, above.
We captured a great set of images, which are already proving really useful for a wide range of marketing and communications, which Shelagh is tackling with the help of JustPRM.

Now in its 26th year, the British Council of Shopping Centres 2009 Conference & Exhibition is at Manchester Central this week - nearly 2000 decision-makers from the retail property industry doing business together over an intensive three days. Manchester Central looks fabulous, having been extended and upgraded over the last 12 months. Monday night saw the exhibition opening, in the main hall. I visited for placenorthwest, the region's premier website for property and regeneration professionals: see the gallery of pictures on their site.
