bcsc conference

Now in its 26th year, the British Council of  Shopping Centres 2009 Conference & Exhibition is at Manchester Central this week -  nearly 2000 decision-makers from the retail property industry doing business together over an intensive three days. Manchester Central looks fabulous, having been extended and upgraded over the last 12 months. Monday night saw the exhibition opening, in the main hall. I visited for placenorthwest, the region's premier website for property and regeneration professionals: see the gallery of pictures on their site.

the sweetest thing...

At the wonderful Forever Manchester Ambassadors event last night; was blown away by the yummy food, which was supplied by the Mark Addy and the English Rose Bakery, a delicious ;-) new business that makes the most gorgeous macaroons. Just look at that presentation - little wonderfulnesses in tiny tissue lined boxes.

Didsbury Open Gardens

To Didsbury Open Gardens yesterday afternoon. Great that the weather held up for most of it. The occasional sprinkling of rain didn't put people off as they did the circuit, or bits of it, mostly on foot or bike. There were 28 altogether, so it was quite a challenge to 'do' them all. Some gardens had refreshments; one a jazz band; another a cellist, and one a guy sculpting with a chainsaw. The Nazarene College had big garden games; a garden across the road had to ask visitors to keep a distance from a duck sitting on eggs by their pond.

Mardi Gras 2010

Posted on Saturday, August 28, 2010, Posted in cityscape, event, manchester, performance
Two years ago I took some pictures at Manchester's Mardi Gras parade, and made my first blog post as a full-time photographer. I'd taken the leap after having been part-time for 18 months. What a great decision that was! The time has flown past and I've met such great people, been some amazing places and had enormous fun. My wonderful clients have given me a fantastically interesting and varied photographic life, ranging from some great family portrait shoots to being commissioned to photograph two travel books by the UK's Independent Publisher of the Year.

Tree of Lights

Posted on Tuesday, December 07, 2010, Posted in charity, event, hospice, manchester
That time of year again - the St Ann's Hospice Tree of Lights services were held at Manchester Cathedral on Sunday. I went, with camera, for the Hospice, for all three services. They are all incredibly moving; the very air thickens with love, loss and memory.

Apprentices or boy band?

It's good to have a clear brief from a client before a shoot: it helps get best results for all concerned. That doesn't mean to say that nobody changes their minds, or that interestingly different things don't present themselves on the day. It's my job, of course, to deliver what I'm asked to deliver, as effectively, efficiently and attractively as I can. Adding value to the results through my technical abilities and "eye" is what I'm commissioned for - as is looking out for 'extras' - perhaps views or perspectives that add something a bit different.

the shooter shot

One of my lovely clients is making a film about their operations, and so when I went to photograph an event for them in Glasgow last week, I met these two smiling people, both charming experts in their field. Good to chat in the bit of downtime we had - don't we all lead such different lives??!!  They were filming and interviewing people I was photographing, and vice versa - and so while they ended up in some of my pictures, I ended up in theirs too. I'm looking forward to seeing their finished product at at my client's big event in London in October. I think. Ho hum!

Fiesta Latina

Posted on Saturday, September 24, 2011, Posted in commercial, event
Castle Street in Liverpool was closed yesterday for Fiesta Latina, organised by Clarity Creation for the Commercial District. It was just great - music, performance, great stalls selling all sorts of fascinating stuff, including some totally delicious food. The restaurants and cafes were buzzing and there were people dancing in the streets most of the afternoon. Even the wedding party going into Viva Brazil stopped for a look and a boogie. A brilliant time was had by all, including the photographer!

volunteers

Yesterday at Manchester Cathedral, Warren Smith, the Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester, as the Queen's representative,  presented the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service to St Ann's Hospice. That he himself is involved with the hospice made it even more special. The volunteers (including me!) turned out in force.

St Ann's Hospice organised their first outdoor "Tree of Lights" event in Oak Meadow Park in Cheadle Hulme, last week, where people of all ages came togethr to remember loved ones. It was an extension of the indoor services held annually at Manchester Cathedral, and was such warm and moving event. Lights are lit in memory of someone special, and the sight of these lights, shining so vibrantly, is a fitting tribute to the warmth these people brought into the lives of others.

manchester pride

My first blog post, marking my move on 1st September to full-time photography after 18 months as a part-timer with a foot in two camps. I wonder what this blog will show as the months roll by? I hope you'll share the journey with me. I’ve had a couple of busy weeks since getting back from holiday; winding up my photography exhibition at the Portico Gallery (thanks to everyone who visited!), confirming the sale of a picture for a book cover, and some great shoots - including young people at the Zion Arts Centre preparing their Moss Side Carnival costumes - amazing colour and energy.

ladies who lunch

Today’s Ladies Fashion Lunch in the ballroom of the Palace Hotel was absolutely fabulous, darling! An annual fund-raising event by St Ann’s Hospice, it also launched Breast Cancer Awareness month. A champagne reception started everyone off nicely, then, after an amazing performance by The Bar Wizards (finalists from ‘Britain’s Got Talent”) and lunch, there was a fashion show (including a spectacular pillow fight), auction and raffle.

acc conference

The British Council for Shopping Centres is holding its 25th annual conference at the spanking new arena and conference centre in Liverpool. I went along for placenorthwest to have a look at the exhibition, which proved to be full of colour and interest. The (mock) Beatles greeted delegates with humour and aplomb... This, and 17 other shots chosen by the editor (a man of great taste and distinction, btw) are in the gallery at www.placenorthwest.co.uk/bcsc-08-in-pictures.html"

Terry Waite CBE, hostage negotiator, humanitarian and author, is a patron of the East Cheshire Hospice Capital Appeal, which seeks to raise £2.4 m for brand new facilities at Millbank Drive. He visited on 12 March; he spent the day at the hospice, talking to delighted staff, patients and visitors, before meeting many more people at the Tytherington Club that evening.  Returning to his roots, Bollington-born Terry gave a compelling talk.

josh meets ryan

This was quite a day - photographing Ryan Giggs, who was opening the first phase of new facilities at the East Cheshire Hospice in Macclesfield.  But if I was impressed (and I was)  that was nothing to how little Josh felt, meeting his hero. I think the pictures tell the story.

alice on tour

Alice Robinson continues to develop her show, and is taking it on tour in the north-west. Tonight I photographed her performance at the Adelphi Studio at Salford University, where she once studied herself.  The show - ‘Alice’ - is both gripping and surprising, so I’m being careful not to give too much away with this picture. But I can say that it’s visually stunning and bursting with energy . You can see her at: Rose Theatre, Edgehill University on 15 October Lowry Studio, The Lowry , Salford on 24 October Unity Theatre, Liverpool on 30 and 31 October

high halle

Posted on Friday, November 06, 2009, Posted in cityscape, event, manchester, performance
High art, perhaps...I'm musing away here. The facts: The Halle held a fundraising event in the stunning penthouse at the top of the Hilton/Beetham Tower in Manchester. It was an awesome evening. Bonfire night - so the view was punctuated all around by fireworks. Inside, the space is incredibly serene on a normal day. Adding a couple of world-class musicians was such a very good idea. It was quite a night.
