manchester pride

My first blog post, marking my move on 1st September to full-time photography after 18 months as a part-timer with a foot in two camps. I wonder what this blog will show as the months roll by? I hope you'll share the journey with me. I’ve had a couple of busy weeks since getting back from holiday; winding up my photography exhibition at the Portico Gallery (thanks to everyone who visited!), confirming the sale of a picture for a book cover, and some great shoots - including young people at the Zion Arts Centre preparing their Moss Side Carnival costumes - amazing colour and energy.

unity theatre

Alice Robinson sold out last night at the Unity Theatre in Liverpool; every seat filled, every eye on her one-woman performance. This was a shot I took during the performance itself, but I like to go to the dress rehearsal wherever possible, as the photographer can (if everyone agrees, of course) move about a bit and get some better and more varied angles. I'm also fascinated by both the artistic and the technical processes...I love seeing how all comes together on the night.

The Artizani Theatre Company is rehearsing The Cabaret (yes!) of Dr Caligari at the John Thaw Theatre at Manchester University, and I dropped in for an hour to get some shots for them. alice on tour

Alice Robinson continues to develop her show, and is taking it on tour in the north-west. Tonight I photographed her performance at the Adelphi Studio at Salford University, where she once studied herself.  The show - ‘Alice’ - is both gripping and surprising, so I’m being careful not to give too much away with this picture. But I can say that it’s visually stunning and bursting with energy . You can see her at: Rose Theatre, Edgehill University on 15 October Lowry Studio, The Lowry , Salford on 24 October Unity Theatre, Liverpool on 30 and 31 October

high halle

High art, perhaps...I'm musing away here. The facts: The Halle held a fundraising event in the stunning penthouse at the top of the Hilton/Beetham Tower in Manchester. It was an awesome evening. Bonfire night - so the view was punctuated all around by fireworks. Inside, the space is incredibly serene on a normal day. Adding a couple of world-class musicians was such a very good idea. It was quite a night.

Liverpool’s Radio City 96.7 teamed up with the Learning and Skills Council to support its campaign to celebrate and reward outstanding achievements in the workplace, which links with the Skills Pledge commitment by Merseyside employers. The station ran a two month campaign to encourage listeners from all over the region to audition for a chance to perform at allstarsmerseyside at the Liverpool Arena and Convention Centre on 5th February 2010 - last night. The successful applicants were provided with top quality mentoring and guidance from Radio City’s own broadcasters in preparation for

Mardi Gras 2010

Two years ago I took some pictures at Manchester's Mardi Gras parade, and made my first blog post as a full-time photographer. I'd taken the leap after having been part-time for 18 months. What a great decision that was! The time has flown past and I've met such great people, been some amazing places and had enormous fun. My wonderful clients have given me a fantastically interesting and varied photographic life, ranging from some great family portrait shoots to being commissioned to photograph two travel books by the UK's Independent Publisher of the Year.

On Saturday night, Clown Lab, Manchester's only Clown theatre company, presented an evening of entertainment featuring cabaret artists from across the country. The first part of the show was great - eight sets from wonderful performers, preceded by the great opener, a timely(ish) Easter sketch from Alice and Mark, the hosts, with a centurion...

headstands

Posted on Friday, April 20, 2012, Posted in children, manchester, performance
Down at Zion Arts Centre to photograph breakdancing classes, and it very quickly became clear that headstands are very important, and pretty tricky to learn. A soft surface helps (the hood of your hoodie will do, or the hoodie itself), as does some demonstration from Justin. But like many things in life, it needs practice, practice, practice!
