man of the match
My nephews in Guernsey are both pretty good at sports: really good, actually! It's been great watching them get into new sports and develop new skills over the years I've been zipping over to visit the family. Love the island, love them. I was over a week ago, and so lucky with excellent weather - we were able to walk and cycle around including to the fabled bluebell woods on the cliffs west of St Peter Port (of which, more later).

gift vouchers
Posted on Thursday, March 25, 2010, Posted in gift vouchers, portrait
A gift voucher can make a lovely present, and this year I'm introducing them for the first time, as we begin to see a little sunshine and the season for lovely, relaxed lifestyle portrait shoots is on the horizon.
You can choose exactly what you'd like to cover, perhaps buying a voucher for all (like the the voucher shown) or part of the shoot fee, or you could add in the cost of a framed print or an album if you prefer. I'll happily tailor it for you, including your name and name of the person you're giving the gift to, if you like. That really make a special, very personal gift.

Just been printing this picture to take down to the framer, and was thinking that sometimes black and white is just perfect.

my friend bought a jacket
Still on the Isle of Harris, after a trip to Rodel Church (where there's a sad wee stone: "Drowned through the ice. Aged 11"), we drove up through the astonishing lunar landscape of the east coast. We looked at Beka Globe's wonderful b&w photography at the Mission House, shown alongside Nikolai Globe's ceramics, which echo elements of the surroundings.

How's this for a different portrait for the wall? Framed in acrylic, it really glows. It seems to light up the hallway as soon as you come through the door - just fabulous! This cool dude wasn't too sure that photographer would fit into his busy day when I arrived for the family's shoot, but he's more than pleased with the result - despite having never heard of Andy Warhol. Mind you, Mum and Dad also have the other pictures in an album, so this won't be the only memento of the day.

Iona Abbey
Posted on Tuesday, June 14, 2011, Posted in architectural, family, portrait, travel
My Mum has for a long time wanted to go to Iona. Her own parents had been there on retreat with their church group, experiencing the Iona Community, helping in the Abbey, and exploring the island: but while Mum had heard so many stories, she'd never yet been. I was curious too. So we went to the tip of a headland on Mull and sailed over the water on a beautiful day in Davey's little brown boat.

happy day
Dave and Ros were married in Lambeth Town Hall, and on the way there we stopped in the doorway of an old church for a few pictures. Ros particularly wanted a photograph of her three daughters and Dave's son together, and we got an absolute cracker. However, this is the one that ended up on the wall in a big, beautiful frame. It makes me smile every time .

One of my lovely clients is making a film about their operations, and so when I went to photograph an event for them in Glasgow last week, I met these two smiling people, both charming experts in their field. Good to chat in the bit of downtime we had - don't we all lead such different lives??!! They were filming and interviewing people I was photographing, and vice versa - and so while they ended up in some of my pictures, I ended up in theirs too. I'm looking forward to seeing their finished product at at my client's big event in London in October. I think. Ho hum!

The Chief Executive of the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority needed a new headshot yesterday for a publication going out next week. My 15 minute slot was carved out of his very busy diary, so I arrived early to have a quick scout round for locations so that we'd waste no time.

love among the rust
Posted on Friday, July 15, 2011, Posted in manchester, portrait, wedding
Karen and Ben's wedding: at Duke's '92 in Castlefield, on a beautiful day, with wall-to-wall smiles, and more than a few happy tears. Ben nearly lost his voice as he said the words he'd prepared to explain what he felt about them and their commitment. Karen was serene and heartfelt as she did the same, in a loving roomful of their family and friends. We took a few minutes to cross the little bridge and take some shots afterwards, celebrating their day and their happiness. Trains and trams rumbled overhead; inquisitive geese examined us for signs of sandwiches.

fun and games
A family photoshoot in Manchester City Centre - a sunny day, with lots to see and climb on - great fun. And when you're a kid having fun, you haven't got time to be distracted by a woman with a camera - you just get on with the fun! Having meandered through Castlefield and along the canals around Deansgate, we popped up by the Bridgewater Hall, where there's a great big marble stone. Quite a challenge for a 10 year old to get onto - and then to stay on - given that it's as smooth as glass, and your brother is literally pulling your leg!

walk in the park
Not only did we have a walk, but trees were climbed, a rugby ball was given some serious welly, and a den was found in a HUGE old tree trunk - and the baby slept through most of it! A sit down on a bench for a rest gave us a shot, which, translated to black and white, will is to be in pride of place in the (black and white) living room. Some of the others from the day will be printed and stretched onto canvas for the new extension.

Ben Scarlett is a runner: 800m is his distance. Respect! I met him at Manchester City Stadium for a portrait session, specifically for a piece to appear in the Manchester Evening News next week: just the start of the publicity that will come as he gets into his stride (see what I did there...?) for the run up (and again!) to the 2012 Olympics, for which he's a qualification contender. His day job is a little different - he works with in the finance field, wielding his laptop instead of those rather fearsome spikes. Go, Ben, go!

the laughing policeman
Sorry - couldn't resist that! Here's PC Hewitt, photographed yesterday to get a picture for a newsletter to inform local residents that he's back on the case re Operation Protector in Manchester City Centre. This is Greater Manchester Police's preparation and delivery of the protection for the autumn political party conference at Manchester Central, which is Manchester's excellent conference and exhibition facility. This is NOT the picture chosen for the newsletter by the way - but it IS my favourite!

My first blog post, marking my move on 1st September to full-time photography after 18 months as a part-timer with a foot in two camps. I wonder what this blog will show as the months roll by? I hope you'll share the journey with me. I’ve had a couple of busy weeks since getting back from holiday; winding up my photography exhibition at the Portico Gallery (thanks to everyone who visited!), confirming the sale of a picture for a book cover, and some great shoots - including young people at the Zion Arts Centre preparing their Moss Side Carnival costumes - amazing colour and energy.

Laura getting ready...
Posted on Thursday, August 11, 2011, Posted in manchester, portrait, wedding
Well...Mrs H is now in Mauritius with her new husband, both still (they say in todays text), on Cloud 9. Me too! And Mark (and it WASN'T just the Ferrari, he swears - and they both SO know it wasn't!). It was an utterly beautiful day...about which I've promised them I'll blog a little. So here goes...

anniversary photograph
Great family, this, who got together on a sunny day in Liverpool for a shoot as part of the celebration of a golden wedding anniversary. We had an excellent couple of hours in and around the garden. Here's one of the pictures, of everyone together, taken in the very useful conservatory.

look into my eyes
Here's a little girl I photographed last month, called Sophie. She'd just woken up and was giving me a good looking over, balanced on the sofa in the late afternoon sunshine. I'm just putting together the album of her shoot, which I really enjoyed.
Great, then, to talk with new portrait clients this morning about their two little daughters, 18 months and 3 years. Sounds like pink features prominently in the girls’ outfits, with fairy wings and sparkly shoes! Can't wait!

blue diamond
Posted on Thursday, August 11, 2011, Posted in manchester, portrait, wedding
I just LOVE the rings. That blue diamond of Neils is exceptional, and the glitter and sparkle of Laura's gorgeous wedding ring is - well - swoon - words aren't enough! Second-shooter Mark and I arrived at the best man's house promptly. We knew we were in the right place by the sound (1st) of the Ferrari and then the sight (2nd) of it shimmering outside the door. Exhale.

a backwards look
To a city apartment block this morning for a portrait shoot with Megan in her lovely, bright home. Her fiance leaves next month for an overseas assignment, and they'll be apart for almost all of the time until their wedding next summer. Megan plans to slip a little album in his bag before he goes, full of some very personal, discreetly beautiful pictures to remind him of her. Here's one I really liked that is suitable for wider sharing!

james benton

James is a singer/songwriter from Kentucky in the USA, now living in France, who uses both electric and acoustic guitars. He and Monnika, a writer, live in an astonishingly beautiful cleft in the hills, with two streams (creeks, says James) running through their land, on which they've built a couple of yurts.
Listening to him rehearsing in his mountain studio at the time, I was struck by the depth and power of his voice, and Leonard Cohen came to mind.

the princess bride
Posted on Friday, August 12, 2011, Posted in manchester, portrait, wedding
Neil arrived at St James's Church with best man Dave in a Ferrari Spyder; Laura arrived with her Dad in a vintage Daimler, at a rather more stately pace. The dress was astonishing: a perfect fairytale, fitted above, floating from the waist down like a proper princess dress. The bouquet? Stunning in every respect - from roses, to arums, to ivy, to berries. As she got out of the car, the bells were pealing out. I was in position inside the church, at the front looking back towards the door, listening to the organist playing as people took their seats.

stella's shoes
St Ann's Hospice is busy organising the annual Midnight Walk for Friday 2 July, and I visited the hospice this week to photograph pairs of basic white trainers that have been decorated by lots of different people, including some well-known celebrities, to help with publicising the event.
However, the show-stoppers for me were devised, designed and decorated by Stella, who is currently a day-care patient at Heald Green. The shoes underneath really are basic white trainers, though it's difficult to believe, looking at them held up by Stella here.

abby at the disco
This little sweetie was with her Mum, Claire, at a wedding I shot in the autumn, and she was just mesmerised by the lights when the guy set up the disco after the meal. I love the picture, and with Claire's permission, have had it printed on canvas, a metre and a half wide, for my exhibition, which starts next month. It'll be hung right opposite the door - you won't be able to miss it!

dreams do come true
One of the things the amazing team at St Ann’s Hospice does is keep an ear open for dreams and wishes. One day, when I happened to be at Little Hulton, Rose, who was a weekly visitor to day-care, had a lovely surprise. She’d always loved Harley Davidson motorcycles; their distinctive look, wonderful sound and air of romance and excitement - but had never been on one. Well, she hadn’t until Louise rode up on her machine that morning! Rose was amazed when she was invited to put on the jacket, and, in the car park, actually climb aboard.

photo-walk
Posted on Tuesday, August 16, 2011, Posted in cityscape, manchester, portrait, urban
Just spent some time walking and talking with cameras: a photowalk - my favourite way to see my favourite (and home) city, and a very mellow way to share enthusiasm, looking for light and shape in the cityscape. Buildings, bits of buildings, strange juxtapositions, water (the cascade picture below was at one of the Castlefield locks), graffiti - there's so much to catch the attention. Jo, pictured here, is a trained fine artist who produces stunning oil paintings, a few of which I'm lucky enough to own, and it's fascinating to see how her eye turns to photography.

shopgirl
I had a wonderful day this week photographing St Ann's Hospice's charity shops - staff, stock and customers. The shops are well laid out, with helpful staff, and many, many surprises to be found in the stock. They have some great pre-loved items for sale, but also a lot of new things - from jewellery to handbags to wedding dresses, donated by designers and manufacturers who know and admire St Ann's work.

susan
Posted on Monday, October 26, 2009, Posted in portrait
I visited Susan at home in 2007 to take her picture, which she wanted to give to her husband in a desk frame for the office. They've moved since then, and it was great to visit her new home, now that the builders have left, which I think was rather later than Susan had anticipated! - for a family shoot organised this time by her daughters. There are some lovely shots, but this is is my favourite from the day, so far.

kirsty gets sporty
Posted on Friday, December 12, 2008, Posted in commercial, portrait, published
Kirsty has a number of strings to her bow - not least, she's a really good make-up artist and an excellent model. She needed some sportswear shots for a model agency (with offices in London and LA - I was well impressed!) and so we got together in a sports centre with a bagful of sports clothing and got down to work. We were just outside Dundee, with snow on the hills, and ice underfoot outside, so not too much like LA..
(Oh - the agency loved the pictures - Kirsty is now on their books. I've asked to be her official photographer for all her overseas assignments, inc LA.

"Infinite Variety" exhibition
Posted on Tuesday, August 23, 2011, Posted in commissioned, portrait, published, women
I'm delighted to have three images in an exhibition this week and next…it's in Southport, in the lovely, light, bright Wayfarers Arcade in Lord Street, opposite the Town Hall. The exhibition is called "Infinite Variety" and celebrates the beauty of the ageing female face. The original idea came from Dame Harriet Walter, who started collecting images to challenge perceptions of what we consider beauty to be.

I know the Welsh word for cheese
Posted on Thursday, May 27, 2010, Posted in commercial, food, portrait, product
It's caws. And I know this because...?
I know this because I visited the dairy at Rhyd y Delyn Farm on Anglesey, where Menai Jones and her family make a range of really wonderful cheeses, including a camembert style, and one with samphire, which gives the green flecks you can see in one of the pictures I took. As you drive into the farm, there are the cows/caws whose milk makes the cheese, grazing all around you, or chewing the cud contentedly under the big, spreading trees. Menai and her daughter Elin are pictured here, in the spotless dairy.

gorgeous
Isn't she lovely? Isn't she wonderful? Isn't she precious? We have been heaven blessed... (courtesy of Stevie Wonder, who puts it so very well!) This is Imogen, a smiley delight, the star of last weekend's 4 generation family portrait shoot. I'm finding myself singing away just looking at her!

ben and martha
Ben and Martha are all of ten weeks old, though Ben has a minute on his sister. They’re already quite distinct little characters - Ben being very much the more placid one. I arrived just before the babies woke for their mid-morning feed, and had a cup of tea and a chat with Julie and Carl - both hands-on parents and a great team - while we checked out light and location options.

the youngest guest
Posted on Tuesday, August 23, 2011, Posted in baby, black and white, portrait, wedding
A baby is such a precious wee thing at any time; this tiny baby came rather worryingly earlier than planned into the world...but she's fine now, and SO loved. Gracie won't remember being the youngest guest at her Aunt Laura's wedding, but everyone else who was there will, I expect. And of course, Aunt Laura will have quite a few photographs to show her niece the story of the day...

DPP Shape set up their spatial planning and design studio last year, bringing together considerable experience and expertise in regeneration and development. They needed to update their image library, so off I went with cameras and tripod to capture the studio and the team, which is led by Shelagh McNerney, above.
We captured a great set of images, which are already proving really useful for a wide range of marketing and communications, which Shelagh is tackling with the help of JustPRM.

Sophie surprised Lawrence with a photo shoot for their first anniversary. What a great idea. I photographed Sophie's family a couple of years ago, since when she's gone to college, where she met Lawrence - on his last day there! Cutting it a bit fine - but fate was clearly at work.

terry waite
Terry Waite CBE, hostage negotiator, humanitarian and author, is a patron of the East Cheshire Hospice Capital Appeal, which seeks to raise £2.4 m for brand new facilities at Millbank Drive. He visited on 12 March; he spent the day at the hospice, talking to delighted staff, patients and visitors, before meeting many more people at the Tytherington Club that evening. Returning to his roots, Bollington-born Terry gave a compelling talk.

Séverine
Séverine and I met on a lovely autumn afternoon at her home in Cheshire, facing south over rolling fields. What a great afternoon we had: a cup of tea here, a glass of wine there, a pause for a bite to eat... chatting all the while, moving from location to location - we got some absolutely wonderful shots, in just one ground floor room and the garden, changing outfits, using just the gorgeous natural light we were blessed with. Great teamwork, Séverine!

olivia
Emma and Allison came to visit yesterday - both bringing their baby daughters, both of whom I’ve photographed this year. They’re growing - what a difference a few months makes! Olivia, here, is wearing a gorgeous creation, knitted by her grandmother, and looking absolutely CAPtivating (see what I did there??!!)). We sorted out some photo-books I’ve designed from their earlier shoots, which will make great - and totally unique - Christmas presents. Lovely!

feeling good
So many women I meet tell me they don’t have a single picture of themselves they really like, let alone one they feel happy enough to give to their boyfriend, fiance or husband as a gift.
But when pictures are taken by a photographer who’s on your side, in flattering light, using professional equipment, including lenses that don’t distort features; when your hair and make-up are beautifully done, you’re wearing great clothes, fabulous lingerie, and using the right poses to show you at your self-confident best - then you will have beautiful pictures too...
Here's some discreet examples f

strength
Posted on Monday, November 14, 2011, Posted in commercial, commissioned, portrait
This was a quick and pleasant commission: a single headshot for a professional man who knew what he wanted...an image in black and white, which was - is - direct, strong and straightforward. I really like the result. Clarity pays off, that's for sure.

waiting...
Emma and Gareth's little boy should be with them very soon. I called round to see how the nursery was coming along and to take some pictures to pin down the memory of this final few weeks. It's hot and humid, which doesn't make it easy. We took our time. Lots of tea, and some serious inroads into a coffee and walnut cake that Emma had made.

four frans
Posted on Wednesday, March 25, 2009, Posted in portrait
Fran came to the studio for a portrait shoot a couple of days ago, and we had a good time. It was one of those no rush, no pressure shoots. Looking through the images afterwards, these four images just leapt out at me...I put them together into one picture as I think they're so complementary. An occasion where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts...?

who you lookin' at?
Posted on Wednesday, November 16, 2011, Posted in commissioned, portrait, sport
I'm working on a slightly different commission at the moment, for a client with a UK-wide organisation, who wants to give every regional office a camera. I've been asked to help produce a guide to go with it, setting out some tips on how to take photographs of people and places with impact and interest for internal and external publication. So over the next few weeks I'm having to do some thinking and writing about photography, which is an interesting change!

the little bridesmaid
Nanw's Mum, Sioned, is a very talented florist. She provided the stunning flowers for the mock wedding shoot last weekend at Neuadd Lwydd, a beautiful country house hotel on Anglesey. Nanw had been bridesmaid at a family wedding a few weeks before, and had loved her dress and really enjoyed the occasion, so I suggested she might like to get the dress on and join in. She was an absolute star!

business portaits
Posted on Wednesday, November 18, 2009, Posted in commercial, portrait, published
Businesses need pictures of their teams, to help them show the personality behind the company, and this company CX hadn't had a new picture taken in several years. When she booked me for her portrait session, Sue explained that she needed a variety of pictures for different uses - website, annual report and to illustrate a profile of her in a business magazine next week. We talked through how best to approach it, and she brought a bag with different outfits to the studio. After a strong cup of tea, we got started, using costume changes and varied backdrops to get what we needed. Job done!

a great day out
Emma and Gareth will get married in June in Knutsford, so we had a trip out there a few days ago for their pre-wedding shoot. This was help us get to know each other - and the camera - a bit better before the wedding day.
We met near the church for a coffee before their shoot. It went really well, not least because they’re a totally gorgeous pair, but also because it was the first bright, sunny day in two weeks - we’d thought we’d have to contend with rain and a howling wind, but it was really lovely.

role reversal
Posted on Sunday, January 08, 2012, Posted in black and white, portrait
I do lots of portraits for people who, when they first contact me, tell me that they hate having their picture taken. I can well understand it - if its an unpleasant experience and then you don't even like the results, who wouldn't feel negative? I like the challenge, and enjoy spending the time and care it takes to organise a good experience, a relaxed and enjoyable shoot, and get great results - whether the pictures are for work or personal use.

fascinating feet
Here is baby Joseph, entranced by his feet. Well, of course he is - they're pretty new to him... as is just about everything, come to think of it! He and his Mum visited the (nicely cosy and warm) studio for a couple of hours of group admiration of all his fascinating, wonderful and gorgeous features. (Loved that MANC t'shirt.) Fun for us all!

study in blue
Posted on Thursday, November 19, 2009, Posted in portrait
Jessica wore the most vibrant electric blue for her shoot; not just the dress but also the fabulous shoes...yet what do you see - those amazing eyes! They are stunning, even in the black and white images.
She has had both of these pictures framed and hung in her apartment. Visitors never fail to complement her. Quite right...and for her choice of photographer too, I hope!

celebration shoot
Posted on Friday, March 02, 2012, Posted in commissioned, portrait, women
I love shoots that celebrate an event or milestone in a woman's life - perhaps a birthday or anniversary. I work with a hair and make-up artist, Roxanna, who is wonderful...very talented, with a gentle touch, bringing her film, TV and editorial experience with her. I ask my client to bring several different outfits and some favourite accessories, and we relax into a few hours of fun, shooting outside and inside the studio. Every shoot is different, but every single one is a wonderful experience, just as much for Roxanna and me as for our client, that's for sure!

Dave and Karolina are both personal trainers - fitness to the power of two! Their portrait shoot was on a Sunday morning; no pressure, no rush. We got some great shots in between cups of green tea and costume changes, just in time to get things organised in time for Christmas presents for families.

What a great afternoon on Sunday, on the PhotoWalk in Manchester's Northern Quarter: three hours of walking and talking, with a wonderful group of photographers. Laura and Neil were kind enough to join us for an hour, to demonstrate how brilliant the area is for portrait and pre-wedding/engagement shoots. Here they are just a few minutes from Piccadilly Station, by the fork of the Ashton and Rochdale canals.

Those eyes!
Posted on Monday, March 14, 2011, Posted in baby, black and white, family, portrait
This lad is really something! Not only one of the most good-natured boys ever, but one of the most enchanting! He can sit up now, and is a VERY good arm-waver...world-class! He has a very appealing 'signature' move - looks like he's working the controls on motorbike handlebars. Cool...

joshua
Great shoot today, with Joshua, his mum and her dad. We did some indoor shots, which were lovely, but had most fun outside by the water. Many ducks were fed, and many mushy leaves were inspected and waggled about in the water - a very busy and productive morning.
Great shoot today, with Joshua, his mum and her dad. We did some indoor shots, which were lovely, but had most fun outside by the water.

white dress
What a lovely white dress! We got some great pictures on this shoot, and that dress, and Mum and Dad's white tops in that big, airy, bright apartment with its huge windows worked so well. It will come as no surprise that the white didn't stay quite so white for long; so we had a cup of tea and a change of clothes and went out into the sunshine for a different feel - and more smiles!

urban beauty
Here's a couple more images from the PhotoWalk, with Laura and Neil modelling. This area is a car park during the week, but empty at weekends. I must admit that I was a bit worried as the security guard walked towards us as we approached the site: we were a big group (30 of us, all but 2 with cameras) and eveyone slowed down in apprehension. I'd included the site on our route for the colour, textures and patterns of its various walls - they make wonderful backgrounds for portraits.

It's good to have a clear brief from a client before a shoot: it helps get best results for all concerned. That doesn't mean to say that nobody changes their minds, or that interestingly different things don't present themselves on the day. It's my job, of course, to deliver what I'm asked to deliver, as effectively, efficiently and attractively as I can. Adding value to the results through my technical abilities and "eye" is what I'm commissioned for - as is looking out for 'extras' - perhaps views or perspectives that add something a bit different.

Family photography with babies is such a pleasure, and the images capture a moment in that family's life forever. These pictures (with others) have just gone into a lovely little album, tied with a satin ribbon, for grandma in Ireland to open on Christmas morning. Aaaah!

This was quite a day - photographing Ryan Giggs, who was opening the first phase of new facilities at the East Cheshire Hospice in Macclesfield. But if I was impressed (and I was) that was nothing to how little Josh felt, meeting his hero. I think the pictures tell the story.

a fabulous hillside home...
Posted on Tuesday, May 10, 2011, Posted in architectural, commercial, interiors, portrait
This amazing building, Kaywana Hall, is so sleek and contemporary, perched in among huge trees on a hillside just up from the Dart estuary in Devon. It's full of light, of exceptional quality in every little detail and ...just works! The builders were just finishing off a refurbishment of the huge outdoor pool and two new guest suites, so I had to dodge materials and ladders and piles of tiles to get the shots my client needed.

madonna
Posted on Monday, January 11, 2010, Posted in black and white, family, portrait
I so love this picture, with mum as the deliberate focus. I look at it and think 'madonna' - serenity? purity? Or is it just that there's so much love there?

african queen
I met Janet, a nurse, at St Ann’s Hospice, when I was photographing a birthday party there recently, and she mentioned that she was keen to have a picture in her African dress - so I when I was there again a week later we found a spot for a few pictures. That was her last day at St Ann’s - she’s off to do more training. But she has her portrait on canvas at home to remind her of St Ann's - and they have one there at the hospice too, to remind them of Janet!

What a surprising and fascinating world it is...I went to Gloucestershire last week to photograph a beautiful home, complete with orangery, ha-ha and dripping wisteria, and met its inspirational owner, Janet Cooksey. I found that she not only welcomes guests to Uplands House, and restores paintings - you'd think that was enough, wouldn't you? - but will also next month defend her title of World Veteran Fencing Champion.

This was a lovely shoot, in the city on a Sunday. Conny and I talked beforehand about what she wanted, which was a combination of a portrait for her mother and some pictures for herself. Conny really likes black and white photography, and had been looking at magazines for inspiration and ideas.
