sunrise

What a view from my studio this morning! Such a vivid sky that it looked unreal. If a red sky in the morning is a shepherd's warnng, I'm taking a raincoat with me today!

DPP Shape set up their spatial planning and design studio last year, bringing together considerable experience and expertise in regeneration and development. They needed to update their image library, so off I went with cameras and tripod to capture the studio and the team, which is led by Shelagh McNerney, above. We captured a great set of images, which are already proving really useful for a wide range of marketing and communications, which Shelagh is tackling with the help of JustPRM.

candles in the dark

St Ann's Hospice organised their first outdoor "Tree of Lights" event in Oak Meadow Park in Cheadle Hulme, last week, where people of all ages came togethr to remember loved ones. It was an extension of the indoor services held annually at Manchester Cathedral, and was such warm and moving event. Lights are lit in memory of someone special, and the sight of these lights, shining so vibrantly, is a fitting tribute to the warmth these people brought into the lives of others.

Mardi Gras 2010

Posted on Saturday, August 28, 2010, Posted in cityscape, event, manchester, performance
Two years ago I took some pictures at Manchester's Mardi Gras parade, and made my first blog post as a full-time photographer. I'd taken the leap after having been part-time for 18 months. What a great decision that was! The time has flown past and I've met such great people, been some amazing places and had enormous fun. My wonderful clients have given me a fantastically interesting and varied photographic life, ranging from some great family portrait shoots to being commissioned to photograph two travel books by the UK's Independent Publisher of the Year.

iSleeve™

Posted on Friday, December 02, 2011, Posted in commercial, commissioned, manchester, product
The new iSleeve™ hit Manchester this week, a beautiful, luxurious, natural leather cover for an iPad or iPhone, in a range of colours. The pop-up shop at 6 King Street looked absolutely wonderful tonight at the opening party, glowing like a jewel-box in the dark, wine flowing, lots of smiles...

I like autumn

Posted on Monday, November 08, 2010, Posted in black and white, fine art, landscape, manchester
This is such a wonderful time of year. Maybe it's memories of all those new school years and uniforms, but autumn for me is redolent of new starts, new challenges and new clothes (even now I always like the new autumn ranges best!).

tram love:1

Posted on Thursday, December 08, 2011, Posted in commissioned, manchester, transport, urban
In a week of the worst weather since last winter, I've been struggling to fulfil a brief for a favourite transport client: I have a list of locations and have discussed and understand what the shots are needed for, but have had to endure grey skies, high winds, hail and general unpleasantness for several days. Last night, the "Blue Hour" came to my rescue, and despite rain and wind I got some shots at Media City that hit the spot. Phew!  Here's a couple. I should add that I really, really love the yellow Metrolink trams. There's just something about that new shape and great colour.

Tree of Lights

Posted on Tuesday, December 07, 2010, Posted in charity, event, hospice, manchester
That time of year again - the St Ann's Hospice Tree of Lights services were held at Manchester Cathedral on Sunday. I went, with camera, for the Hospice, for all three services. They are all incredibly moving; the very air thickens with love, loss and memory.

tram love: 2

Posted on Saturday, December 10, 2011, Posted in commercial, commissioned, manchester, transport
I didn't know I'd turn into a yellow tram geek, but I did, somewhere along the line(!). So - being asked to go to the depot and get some images for the Transport Authority meant it was beginning to feel a lot like Christmas.  Things I found out on my visit:  1. The yellow trams are referred to as 'bananas' by the staff. Not too inventive, but I can get that... 2. They're 'stabled' at the depot. 3. The toolkits are red with yellow dots. Love that.

snow!

Posted on Wednesday, December 01, 2010, Posted in fine art, flower, manchester
The rest of the country seems to have had so much snow, so surprisingly early in the winter - the papers and tv are full of it. After a few days of ridiculous snow envy, we finally got snow in Manchester overnight, so I zipped off to my little local park this afternoon to see what I could see. Well, perhaps not 'zipped'; boots squeaking on the pavement, walking like some sort of ridiculous arthritic heron, I was hoping that I didn't slip and fall. Snow envy doesn't survive long once we realise that in practice it's a nightmare!

gorgeous skin

Posted on Wednesday, December 14, 2011, Posted in commercial, commissioned, manchester, product
I've just finished another shoot for the gorgeous iSleeve - capturing images of more luxury materials for the beautiful iPad and iPhone covers of sumpuous leathers. suedes and patents. iSleeves are hand made in Manchester, and although only just launched this month, are flying out of the pop-up shop at 6 King Street in Manchester. Great to be part of the team, guys!

Manchester University is an amazing place, up there internationally in terms of quality in both teaching and research - the biggest UK educational campus outside London.

My first blog post, marking my move on 1st September to full-time photography after 18 months as a part-timer with a foot in two camps. I wonder what this blog will show as the months roll by? I hope you'll share the journey with me. I’ve had a couple of busy weeks since getting back from holiday; winding up my photography exhibition at the Portico Gallery (thanks to everyone who visited!), confirming the sale of a picture for a book cover, and some great shoots - including young people at the Zion Arts Centre preparing their Moss Side Carnival costumes - amazing colour and energy.

blue sky

Posted on Sunday, January 15, 2012, Posted in landscape, manchester
It's so good to have some blue skies again, after such a lot of overcast, drizzling, grey days. Yesterday, when I was supposed to be scouting locations in the Northern Quarter, I couldn't stop looking up. It was glorious!

rail surprise

Posted on Thursday, January 13, 2011, Posted in architectural, commercial, interiors, manchester
Victoria Station was opened in 1844, named after the monarch with her "gracious permission". I visited earlier this week,  to photograph for GMITE, who will be communicating over coming months on the refurbishment of the station, which starts in the spring. The station is very busy; trains and trams are going in and out all the time, of course, but it's also right next to and connected to Manchester Evening News Arena, the second busiest entertainment venue in the UK after the O2 Arena in London.

To the Manchester Academy yesterday, to photograph 6th form students preparing for the Exodus Festival 2009, this year part of the Manchester International Festival, which is currently lighting up the City . Energy, smiles, design flair - all the ingredients were there.

spring photowalk

Posted on Thursday, January 12, 2012, Posted in cityscape, manchester, urban
I'm organising a photowalk in Manchester's offbeat and interesting Northern Quarter for Sunday 22 April, starting at 1pm, and ending at 4/4.30pm after a drink and chat.  It will be a relaxed, sociable event, for photographers of all levels of ability to walk, talk and shoot together. While I'm organising it with The Guild of Photographers, everyone is welcome - and it's free. I'll sort out the route nearer the time, as well as starting and finishing places, and would welcome any ideas/thoughts.

Salford skies

I've been out and about recently looking for some images to make a set, along with some of Manchester, for 'new' wallspace in St Ann's Hospice's Little Hulton building. Refurbishment of part of the in-patient unit has just been completed, and the hospice wanted a selection of pictures: some for the corridors to generate interest and comment, and some restful, "but not boring or gloomy" ones for side rooms. An excellent and enjoyable commission!

high halle

Posted on Friday, November 06, 2009, Posted in cityscape, event, manchester, performance
High art, perhaps...I'm musing away here. The facts: The Halle held a fundraising event in the stunning penthouse at the top of the Hilton/Beetham Tower in Manchester. It was an awesome evening. Bonfire night - so the view was punctuated all around by fireworks. Inside, the space is incredibly serene on a normal day. Adding a couple of world-class musicians was such a very good idea. It was quite a night.

Apprentices or boy band?

Posted on Thursday, March 31, 2011, Posted in event, manchester, portrait
It's good to have a clear brief from a client before a shoot: it helps get best results for all concerned. That doesn't mean to say that nobody changes their minds, or that interestingly different things don't present themselves on the day. It's my job, of course, to deliver what I'm asked to deliver, as effectively, efficiently and attractively as I can. Adding value to the results through my technical abilities and "eye" is what I'm commissioned for - as is looking out for 'extras' - perhaps views or perspectives that add something a bit different.

bcsc conference

Posted on Tuesday, November 10, 2009, Posted in commercial, event, manchester, published
Now in its 26th year, the British Council of  Shopping Centres 2009 Conference & Exhibition is at Manchester Central this week -  nearly 2000 decision-makers from the retail property industry doing business together over an intensive three days. Manchester Central looks fabulous, having been extended and upgraded over the last 12 months. Monday night saw the exhibition opening, in the main hall. I visited for placenorthwest, the region's premier website for property and regeneration professionals: see the gallery of pictures on their site.

playing with light

Posted on Tuesday, January 31, 2012, Posted in architectural, commissioned, manchester
I was asked  to go along and photograph a lighting workshop held in Manchester Cathedral, one of a number of "NightGeists" being hosted in various iconic locations by Bega. The workshops give delegates - most of them designers of one sort or another - an enjoyable way of playing with Bega products and taking a ‘hands on’ approach to the application of the luminaires and how they look in situ.

poker place

Posted on Friday, April 15, 2011, Posted in architectural, commercial, interiors, manchester
Manchester 235 is already pretty well-known around these parts. It's the real deal, with an impressive gaming floor, two restaurants, function room and various private rooms and lounges, open all night and uber-glam. The latest addition is a poker lounge, which I went to photograph this week. The colours absolutely glow - glorious stuff.

yellow trams

Posted on Wednesday, January 20, 2010, Posted in commercial, manchester, published
Manchester has a great tram system, which has been being upgraded over the last year, along with bright new yellow branding . New trams in the yellow livery have arrived and are gradually being introduced. Three are in service and one or two on test, so when I went out to photograph them for GMPTE today, I had to be patient. But they’re worth waiting for - really striking. Well. I think so.

castlefield detour

Posted on Monday, February 06, 2012, Posted in cityscape, manchester, urban
I'm working on a commission for a client campaign to encourage urban commuter cyclists, so am covering quite a bit of ground at the moment capturing images of bikes and their riders. Walking back early this morning from Chester Road, I detoured through the Castlefield Basin. The morning light very briefly flared, just as I was coming across the bridge. I caught a shot of the the unfinished Potato Wharf reflected in the water - there are a couple of geese in there somewhere, up at the top!

SO happy!

Posted on Tuesday, June 21, 2011, Posted in manchester, wedding
Sunday in Castlefield was just lovely. The annual Manchester Day Parade was going on close by, so there was lots of bustling and music and some great costumes all around. Dukes'92 and Albert's Shed were both absolutely buzzing, including the courtyard, which was full of people enjoying the sunshine. In the midst of all of this activity, and after being together for ten years, Karen and Ben got married, surrounded by their friends and family, and with the help of the amazing Dukes team.

manchester's wheel

Posted on Tuesday, February 09, 2010, Posted in architectural, cityscape, commercial, manchester, urban
The Wheel of Manchester is 60m high, air-conditioned and, more to the point in this weather, heated. It’s also really beautiful lit up pinkly against a deep blue evening sky. That’s it reflected in Selfridges on the left hand side.  I wonder if it’s pink because this is Valentine’s week?

reflection

Posted on Wednesday, February 08, 2012, Posted in black and white, manchester, urban
Another day, another detour. This is a reflection of a tree in the still water of the Castlefield Basin. The sky was grey, the day stayed gray, but it didn't rain. (Looking on the bright side, here!)

I do love Manchester's trams, especially the new yellow ones. I've become a total tram geek - anorak? - whatever!  Great then, to go along to the Arndale Centre, to watch - and photograph - people taking time from their Saturday tasks, or leisure, to take a look at the exhibition stands about the proposed Metrolink 2nd City Crossing. There were big signs across the city centre, telling people about the exhibition, where it was and what it was about, and inviting their views, and there were plenty of staff on hand to answer questions.

On Saturday night, Clown Lab, Manchester's only Clown theatre company, presented an evening of entertainment featuring cabaret artists from across the country. The first part of the show was great - eight sets from wonderful performers, preceded by the great opener, a timely(ish) Easter sketch from Alice and Mark, the hosts, with a centurion...

Karen and Ben's wedding: at Duke's '92 in Castlefield, on a beautiful day, with wall-to-wall smiles, and more than a few happy tears. Ben nearly lost his voice as he said the words he'd prepared to explain what he felt about them and their commitment. Karen was serene and heartfelt as she did the same, in a loving roomful of their family and friends. We took a few minutes to cross the little bridge and take some shots afterwards, celebrating their day and their happiness. Trains and trams rumbled overhead; inquisitive geese examined us for signs of sandwiches.

Manchester's fabulous tram service rebranding includes staff uniforms. I spent a morning out and about on tramstops and trams with three officers whose job is to help customers, as well as to check tickets and travel passes. We had a great time, perhaps partly due to the hilarity caused by my swaying about with the camera on moving trams trying to focus and not fall over!

What a great afternoon on Sunday, on the PhotoWalk in Manchester's Northern Quarter: three hours of walking and talking, with a wonderful group of photographers. Laura and Neil were kind enough to join us for an hour, to demonstrate how brilliant the area is for portrait and pre-wedding/engagement shoots.  Here they are just a few minutes from Piccadilly Station, by the fork of the Ashton and Rochdale canals.

Ben Scarlett is a runner: 800m is his distance. Respect! I met him at Manchester City Stadium for a portrait session, specifically for a piece to appear in the Manchester Evening News next week: just the start of the publicity that will come as he gets into his stride (see what I did there...?) for the run up (and again!) to the 2012 Olympics, for which he's a qualification contender. His day job is a little different - he works with in the finance field, wielding his laptop instead of those rather fearsome spikes. Go, Ben, go!

The museum of science and industry is a major attraction in Manchester, and has been steadfastly improving its appeal over recent years. This includes new, extended and renovated buildings, close attention to service standards, an enormously high level of interactivity (?) and some absolutely world-class exhibitions . I was on my way to Castlefield one evening at sunset and saw this image, with the  - well, thing - that marks the museum's skyline against a dramatic sky. A bit of experimentation followed, and this was the result.

headstands

Posted on Friday, April 20, 2012, Posted in children, manchester, performance
Down at Zion Arts Centre to photograph breakdancing classes, and it very quickly became clear that headstands are very important, and pretty tricky to learn. A soft surface helps (the hood of your hoodie will do, or the hoodie itself), as does some demonstration from Justin. But like many things in life, it needs practice, practice, practice!

Laura getting ready...

Well...Mrs H is now in Mauritius with her new husband, both still (they say in todays text), on Cloud 9. Me too! And Mark (and it WASN'T just the Ferrari, he swears - and they both SO know it wasn't!). It was an utterly beautiful day...about which I've promised them I'll blog a little. So here goes...

old and new

Posted on Tuesday, March 02, 2010, Posted in architectural, cityscape, fine art, manchester, urban
It can be such a great start to the day to get up at sunrise and go for a wander somewhere in the city with the camera. Yesterday I went down to Castlefield and had a very productive couple of hours before the reward of scrambled eggs and a HUGE cup of tea. This picture shows the 47 storeys of the Beetham Tower (well, most of them) reflected in the canal alongside some (occupied) barges. A little tweaking has taken place - I was after an 'old postcard' effect...

yes, it's a Ferrari

The Haughin wedding: part 2. This wedding involved a lot of lovely things. One of them was red. It had Neil's initials as the numberplate (how did he/they DO that?) and it was drop-dead-gorgeous. Mark Rawlings very kindly came up from London to second-shoot this fabulous wedding with me: who'd have thought one man could take so many pictures of one car, eh, Mark?

brother@hallé

Posted on Tuesday, March 23, 2010, Posted in commercial, food, manchester
Brother are major sponsors of the Hallé, and I went along to the Bridgewater Hall at the weekend to take some pictures for them at their Oscar-themed dinner, before Sir Mark Elder donned a long gold brocade coat ("I am Oscar tonight!") to conduct the full orchestra playing Oscar-awarded music. The dinner menu was exquisite - exactly that created for last year's Oscars ceremony - note the white chocolate Oscar on that plate. Wow!

blue diamond

Posted on Thursday, August 11, 2011, Posted in manchester, portrait, wedding
I just LOVE the rings. That blue diamond of Neils is exceptional, and the glitter and sparkle of Laura's gorgeous wedding ring is - well - swoon - words aren't enough! Second-shooter Mark and I arrived at the best man's house promptly. We knew we were in the right place by the sound (1st) of the Ferrari and then the sight (2nd) of it shimmering outside the door. Exhale.

lowry theatre

Posted on Tuesday, April 13, 2010, Posted in architectural, cityscape, manchester, urban
Out and about in the spring sunshine, I was showing some visitors some of our local delights. We stopped off aat Salford Quays, where the skyline is always changing as development lopes on - there's always something new to see. My eye was caught by the Lowry, so dramatic in the strong sunlight against a gorgeous blue sky.

the princess bride

Posted on Friday, August 12, 2011, Posted in manchester, portrait, wedding
Neil arrived at St James's Church with best man Dave in a Ferrari Spyder; Laura arrived with her Dad in a vintage Daimler, at a rather more stately pace. The dress was astonishing: a perfect fairytale, fitted above, floating from the waist down like a proper princess dress. The bouquet? Stunning in every respect - from roses, to arums, to ivy, to berries. As she got out of the car, the bells were pealing out. I was in position inside the church, at the front looking back towards the door, listening to the organist playing as people took their seats.

The Chief Executive of the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority needed a new headshot yesterday for a publication going out next week. My 15 minute slot was carved out of his very busy diary, so I arrived early to have a quick scout round for locations so that we'd waste no time.

photo-walk

Posted on Tuesday, August 16, 2011, Posted in cityscape, manchester, portrait, urban
Just spent some time walking and talking with cameras: a photowalk - my favourite way to see my favourite (and home) city, and a very mellow way to share enthusiasm, looking for light and shape in the cityscape. Buildings, bits of buildings, strange juxtapositions, water (the cascade picture below was at one of the Castlefield locks), graffiti - there's so much to catch the attention.  Jo, pictured here,  is a trained fine artist who produces stunning oil paintings, a few of which I'm lucky enough to own, and it's fascinating to see how her eye turns to photography.

fun and games

Posted on Monday, April 19, 2010, Posted in cityscape, family, kids, manchester, portrait, urban
A family photoshoot in Manchester City Centre - a sunny day, with lots to see and climb on - great fun. And when you're a kid having fun, you haven't got time to be distracted by a woman with a camera - you just get on with the fun!  Having meandered through Castlefield and along the canals around Deansgate, we popped up by the Bridgewater Hall, where there's  a great big marble stone. Quite a challenge for a 10 year old to get onto - and then to stay on - given that it's as smooth as glass, and your brother is literally pulling your leg!

colour, shape and light

Posted on Tuesday, August 16, 2011, Posted in architectural, interiors, manchester
What's happened at Salford Quays over the last couple of decades is amazing: and the place is a real favourite with photographers, local and visiting. There's enough room, not least because of the huge tracts of water, for big skies to showcase stunning bulldings and structures - the bridges themselves are epic - and there's such strong colour and shape. These exteriors are well documented, but there's lots to see inside as well. The interior of The Lowry is so rewarding for a snapper - bright Lego colours juxtaposed brilliantly, and so much light and shade to play with...

Oh! What a night...

Posted on Wednesday, June 09, 2010, Posted in cityscape, manchester, urban
Well, perspective is indeed a wonderful thing... Was up on 47th floor of the Beetham Tower tonight, photographing an event for the local charity Forever Manchester - who are just SO amazing. It's a buzzy, down-to-earth, local, and exceedingly practical outfit that recognises reality, connects with human beings, rolls up its sleeves and gets on with it. Refreshing? Just downloading the pictures now - this is an odd one I took for me - I liked this goods train snaking through Castlefield. More to follow, in due course.

volunteers

Yesterday at Manchester Cathedral, Warren Smith, the Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester, as the Queen's representative,  presented the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service to St Ann's Hospice. That he himself is involved with the hospice made it even more special. The volunteers (including me!) turned out in force.

Didsbury Open Gardens

Posted on Monday, June 14, 2010, Posted in charity, event, flower, hospice, landscape, manchester, urban
To Didsbury Open Gardens yesterday afternoon. Great that the weather held up for most of it. The occasional sprinkling of rain didn't put people off as they did the circuit, or bits of it, mostly on foot or bike. There were 28 altogether, so it was quite a challenge to 'do' them all. Some gardens had refreshments; one a jazz band; another a cellist, and one a guy sculpting with a chainsaw. The Nazarene College had big garden games; a garden across the road had to ask visitors to keep a distance from a duck sitting on eggs by their pond.
