Springing

March 20, 2023 Lesley Chalmers

Having a bit of a ‘loving yellow’ moment here - as we shake free of winter, there are suddenly hordes of daffodils across the city. Even if there’s not always a blue sky to go with them, they cheer our days.

This is a mixed media painting on stretched canvas, 100cm square. (More in the gallery.)

Alright on the night

January 11, 2023 Lesley Chalmers

It’ll be alright on the night

Witnessing the challenge and intensity of a dress rehearsal led to this painting - my mind was full of colour sand cacophony as the various elements of the production struggled to align and settle, efforts disjointed as the director kept stopping and starting to adjust lighting and sound.

But it WAS alright on the night!

(It’s 20” square on board - see more in the gallery.)

Colour pop

December 5, 2022 Lesley Chalmers

This painting was the result of a project at Creative Arts in Manchester, emphasising the process of thinking through and executing an idea for an image, using a sketchbook for planning. It’s a mixed media painting, with its many layers giving it depth and texture.

(It’s 20” square on board - see more in the gallery.)

That night

This is a painting on stretched canvas, 80cm square. I think that everyone who’s seen it has interpreted it differently.

Clarity of purpose

December 29, 2021 Lesley Chalmers

My friend Max, at age 6, shows such clear intent when he paints. He knows exactly what he wants to use and what he wants to do. When it’s done he’s on to the next thing … “let’s make a den!”. I am in awe!

Tideline

November 11, 2021 Lesley Chalmers

Today I’ve been thinking about the sea, and the Hebridean islands in particular. It’s such a long time since I’ve been. This painting evokes the smell of the sea in salty winds, the churn of the surf on the dark rock and weed.

It’s mixed media, 12 x 12” on cradled birch board. See more in the gallery.

Equinox

June 5, 2021 Lesley Chalmers

I’ve been working away happily, reading a lot on art principles and trying new things.

Mixed media using a limited palette, on l2’ square board, it’s small, but complex. It’s one of my favourites :)

In the neighbourhood

January 12, 2021 Lesley Chalmers

Had a happy day in the studio with the rain pouring outside. Result, a few 12 x 12” boards almost finished. Maybe this one just needs a title now. I’ll sleep on it.

Painting in stereo

November 25, 2019 Lesley Chalmers

In Kent with a friend and with paints. We each started from opposite end of the canvas - and chose such different colours! I’d forgotten the wonderful feeling - it’s so long since I picked up a brush. Think that might be a ‘note to self’ moment!

We ordered a fancy frame, and my friend sent me a picture of our joint masterpiece in glorious gilt! :-)
